Sabah Secure Stunning Upset Over Slavia in Baku
Average Entertainment Futmetrix Score: 45/100. A spectacular goalkeeping masterclass laid the foundation for Sabah FA to execute a textbook underdog victory against a wasteful Slavia Praha.
The Early Skirmishes
Slavia Praha controlled possession early on, setting a relentless tempo at Baku Olympic Stadium. The Intensity was evident from the opening exchanges, with the visitors generating 18 total shots throughout the evening. However, the hosts thought they had drawn first blood in the 17th minute. Kaheem Parris found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into raptures, only for VAR to decisively intervene and rule the goal out. This crucial intervention maintained the deadlock and forced Sabah FA to absorb increasing pressure. Slavia looked incredibly dangerous in the final third, racking up 1.74 expected goals, but they continually met a brick wall in the shape of S. Pokatilov, whose crucial saves kept the hosts firmly in the contest.
The Decisive Breakthrough
The true turning point arrived shortly after the restart, shifting the Balance of the tie entirely. In the 49th minute, Parris finally got his reward, finishing with clinical precision after a perfectly timed delivery from Ivan Lepinjica. This goal forced the Czech side to push even higher up the pitch, leaving dangerous spaces in behind. The visitors continued to test the Sabah defence, forcing a flurry of corners and peppering the target. In total, a combined 30 shots turned this clash into a frantic shooting gallery, but Pokatilov's heroics frustrated the visitors time and again. Slavia's inability to convert their statistical superiority into tangible rewards proved to be their ultimate undoing as the clock ticked down.
A Ruthless Finale
As the match entered its dying embers, the Stakes reached boiling point. Slavia committed bodies forward in desperate search of an equaliser, leaving themselves wholly exposed on the counter. Sabah capitalised on this vulnerability in the 88th minute when substitute Patrick Orphe Mbina brilliantly teed up Joy Lance Mickels. The attacker made no mistake, doubling the advantage and confirming a massive Upset victory. The result carries immense weight in the Champions League group phase, pushing Sabah up the standings while leaving Slavia rooted with zero points from their opening fixtures. This was a classic smash-and-grab performance in Baku, driven by defensive resilience and devastating efficiency when it mattered most.
Key Questions
How did VAR change this match?
VAR denied Kaheem Parris an early goal in the 17th minute, keeping the match scoreless and forcing Sabah to dig deep defensively before eventually breaking through.
How did substitute K. Parris change the game?
Though starting the match, Parris was the ultimate attacking catalyst, breaking the deadlock with a brilliant 49th-minute strike to establish Sabah's lead.

Early Elimination Fears Grip Bank Respublika Arena
Average Entertainment Futmetrix Score: 45/100. With both sides suffering opening-day defeats, another loss here could decisively sink their chances of reaching the top-24 playoff line.
The Setup
A dismal Form rating tells the story of two teams already playing catch-up in the UEFA Champions League. Sabah FA endured a harsh reality check on matchday one, shipping four goals without reply and immediately dropping into the bottom-tier elimination band. Visitors Slavia Praha showed more attacking bite in their 3-2 opening loss but still sit on zero points. The modest Stakes and lackluster Stars ratings reflect a tie short on glamour, but the strong Balance suggests a tightly contested scramble for European survival.
Key Battle
The away midfield, anchored by C. Zafeiris and M. Sadílek, will look to dictate the tempo against a fragile home defense. Sabah FA's back line looked entirely out of its depth in their opener, and they must drastically tighten up to prevent the Czech visitors from controlling possession and exploiting gaps.
Our Prediction
Expect Slavia Praha to control the ball and edge a narrow victory. The visitors demonstrated superior attacking cohesion in their opening fixture, and that firepower should be just enough to break down a vulnerable Sabah defense, leaving the hosts staring at an early European exit.
